Teddy Bear's passport

Outline of the activity
The teacher asked the children to bring their teddies into school so that the children could make passports for them. This would allow teddy to make imaginary journeys or travel with the children on holidays abroad. The teacher then sent her own teddy on a ‘virtual’ tour of the world sending e-mails to the children from different countries giving simple information about each of the countries (places) visited.

Skills Covered
The children developed basic literacy and numeracy skills - measuring and recording information about their teddies. They also used the digital camera and art package to create images of their bears which they saw being used to create the passport. They were also able to broaden their knowledge and understanding of geographical features of different places.

Rationale
The activity allows the children to develop a wide range of key skills in an exciting, interesting context. An ideal way to introduce the use of the digital camera to the children and develop their ability to use the art package.

Result
The children produced colourful, attractive passports for their teddies which were laminated and taken home. Digital photos and drawings of their teddies were used for class displays covering many areas of the curriculum e.g. teddy bear timeline, comparing and sorting according to size.
