Outline of the activity
Children capture images of themselves and landscape elements using a digital camera. They alter and manipulate the digital image in Photo editing programs such as Adobe PhotoShop. They explore different filters and techniques for changing the images. To complete the activity the children sketch and draw similar effects using more traditional techniques.
Skills Covered
The children used a range of ICT skills during this activity. They explored and applied artistic methods editing and saving new images. The activity involved considerable discussion of the merits of different effects, patterns and textures. The children evaluated their work, writing and describing the changes they made.
Rationale
The activity involved children experimenting with artistic methods and changing textures, shapes and patterns in ways that would not normally be open to them in the classroom situation.
Results
The children produce very high quality artwork. They apply different effects onto photographs of familiar people and objects. This is a very high motivation exercise. Children were asked to recreate the manipulated images using pencil and paper techniques.
