Art and Geometry
Outline of the activity
Having considered some of the designs by the artist William Morris and designer Laura Ashley, the children were asked to use the art package Primary Colours to produce their own imaginative design for wallpaper or fabric, which included a symmetrical or tiled pattern based on mathematical shapes or natural forms.
Skills Covered
Children were to able to develop their making skills in Art imaginatively and creatively. They used a wide variety of the tools and features available in the art package to produce their designs. The children learnt how to create patterns using the symmetry tool and repeated patterns using copy/paste or the tile tool. They learnt to save, retrieve and edit their work.
Rationale
Children use a computer art package to explore and experiment with a range of designs. They develop and refine a design selecting the most appropriate tools, and saving drafts as they are developed.
Result
The children produced a whole range of colourful patterns and designs which created a very eye catching class display. They became extremely confident in the use of the Art package and demonstrated that they could save, load and make changes to their designs.
