House of the future

Outline of the activity
Children were working on a project to design a house for the new Millennium. They used many aspects of ICT researching houses of the past, gathering and recording information on present day houses and designing and creating model houses of the future. The project was organised by the local EBP and sponsored by the CITB and South East Wales TEC.

Skills Covered
The children researched houses of the past using a range of reference materials and by visiting the Museum of Welsh Life . They also developed research skills investigating future houses e.g. finding out about solar panels and eco-systems. They created a database and printed graphs and charts using the data. They developed a range of DTP and word processing skills producing a variety of publications including reports on the various visits they made and newsletters telling parents and governors about the project. The children’s awareness of the construction industry and design processes were greatly enhanced.

Rationale
The use of ICT enhanced many aspects of this project. Also it gave the children opportunities to develop a wide range of skills involving communicating and handling information in realistic contexts.

Result
Much of the work involving the use of ICT such as the graphs, digital photos, reports , letters, designs that were produced were put on display in the Presentation Event which was held at a local hotel. The children also prepared and delivered a very professional ‘Powerpoint’ presentation to the invited audience.
