3. Landslides

is an interactive British Geological Survey site which uses Geographical Information Systems, GIS, to explore digital maps.

  • The link given takes you directly to the hazards-landslides section.
  • ‘ the webGIS’ takes you to landslides in the UK,
  • ‘Zoom’ gives you a choropleth map of different landslide potential through the chosen area e.g. W Wales
  • a second map can be chosen from many geological variables: groundwater; land quality; other hazards; to place alongside or merge with the landslide map of the chosen area of Wales.
Thus a GIS can be built up of landslides, causes, ground conditions and other hazards in your area of Wales

There is a ‘How to use the webGIS’ facility.

The Rhondda Valleys: using GIS to visualise a variety of geological issues in an intensely mined area. P.J.Brabham pp222-233,Urban Geology in Wales I, 2004,  National Museum of Wales. Also Urban Geology in Wales II, 2005.

These articles use photographs – high vantage points and aerial, and 3D landscape models to enhance the discussion of landsliding in the Rhondda.
