describes

MONARCH [Modelling Natural Resource Responses to Climate Change] research into how future climate change will affect biodiversity

MONARCH Phase 1 identified the suitable climate for different species or habitats.

11 bioclimatic classes were identified in Wales

  • 4 upland
  • 3 coastal
  • 4 Welsh borders or S Wales
Each bioclimatic class was represented by a range of:

  • dominant
  • threatened
  • climatically sensitive species
This indicates what habitats and species will flourish or decline with future climate changes

MONARCH 2

provides predictions at a local scale. One of the localities is Snowdonia. The results available December 2005 indicate:

  • bog, deep peat, fen, marsh and swamp will increase with dwarf shrub and grasslands reducing in area
  • sessile oak, montane and upland heath species will not change, but bluebells and pied flycatchers may be less
