Rainforests

Rainforest projectOutline of the activity
This was a research project based around the class topic – Rainforests. Children were asked to produce a book on a specified theme – for example, rainforest wildlife. They used CD ROM Encyclopaedias and the Internet as sources of information and published using MS Publisher.

Skills Covered
The children used editing skills to prepare the materials for publication. Much of the information they located was rewritten for their audience. The children used cut and paste techniques in selection of images. The publishing of the book involved work on page layouts and consideration was given to the aesthetic quality of the work.

Rationale
The project was part of the class topic on rainforests. The children were given a free investigational role in the construction and selection of pertinent materials. The activity not only extends ICT skills but involved considerable development of research and organisational skill also.

Results
This is a high motivation exercise. ICT was used to support a Geography topic. The pupils spent a great deal of time selecting relevant materials and they were discerning in their use of examples. They produced a high quality set of books, which were and are still used as class resources.
