Portrait symmetry

Outline of the activity
Children capture images of themselves using a digital camera. They crop the digital image down a vertical line of symmetry using U Lead Photo Impact, a photo editing programs or DTP packages such as Microsoft Publisher. To complete the activity the children sketch and draw the completed symmetrical image choosing from black ink or a range of pencils. More able pupils work on combining two images to create portraits.

Skills Covered
The children used a wide range of ICT skills during this activity. They explored and applied artistic methods editing and saving new images. The children evaluated their work and described the images they produced.

Rationale
The lesson was primarily art based but made links to mathematics also a great deal of discussion was evident during each stage of development. A range of ICT skills were developed including saving and loading images, cropping, cutting and pasting.

Result
The children thoroughly enjoyed this activity and quickly became confident in the use of the digital camera. As a result the children produced high quality artwork. An attractive wall display was created using the portraits.
