How was it used?

The resource was used as a tool for discussing and planning a series of lessons for packaging in D&T.

There are plenty of opportunities for developing thinking throughout the topic and some of the NGfL developing thinking tools are used to help the process of design.  The extension topic is a useful tool to make a video that advertises the product and can be used to appraise the overall topic.

The PowerPoints were used to create discussion and to develop thinking skills within the class.  They provided stimulus for the pupils to go on and research the topic of packaging.

Each Activity gives good opportunity for discussion points for the pupils to engage in developing their thinking skills.  The focus on packaging also links to developing 3D shape and how to approach advertising a finished product.

The teacher used all of the PowerPoints and the associated resources for designing, planning and evaluating the product made.

Impact and Outcomes

  • Pupils were engaged by the questioning of the teacher.
  • The pupils were keen to use the resource and found the layout helpful to be able to make notes about their ideas.  
  • The step by step approach of the resource aids the teacher to lead the pupils and the teacher can choose to use all or some of the resource according to need.
  • Many opportunities are available for the teacher to question the pupils using varying approaches using lower and higher order thinking skills.

Learner Feedback

  • The pupils enjoyed the activity.  
  • They were able to question each other effectively and develop their thinking skills.
  • They enjoyed the film and thought it the prompts were helpful.
  • Pupils agreed that they were able to develop questions with the help of the resource.
