How was it used?
The activity was used to reinforce even numbers and allow the children to investigate number patterns.
The pupils worked initially as a whole class and then worked in groups at the different learning areas around the class. They chose the apparatus they wanted to use to gather and record their data.
Impact and Outcomes
- The pupils were engaged with the task and eager to find solutions to the problem
- One little girl was so enthusiastic she even went on to devise her own problem based on the same idea.
- The pupils learning was enhanced and their mathematical knowledge put to good use by allowing them to choose their own method for solving the problem and recording their findings
Learner Feedback
As soon as the activity started one little boy was heard to say ‘Ooh great I love Mr Jones!’
Other Resources
Ducks, water tray, buttons, blocks, playdough, printable copies of the problem, pencils, paper, scissors, glue, sequins, computer
Lesson Learnt
Allowing the pupils to solve the problem in their own way helps them reinforce their mathematical understanding of odd and even numbers
