Roamer visits the shops

Outline of the activity
Using a pre-constructed ‘row of shops’, the children commanded the roamer to visit the shops in turn firstly only using the forward and backwards commands and then gradually developing their knowledge and skills according to ability.

Skills Covered
Children learn how to enter commands into the roamer turtle progressively developing their knowledge and understanding. Children learn what goods are sold at the various shop types for language.

Rationale
The Roamer supports Mathematics and Geography in its use of understanding and describing positions and direction. It is a fun tool for children to experiment with and investigate.

Result
Some children just ‘played’. Others wrote a small program using the commands forward and back. Gradually right 90, left 90 and turn 360 was introduced for the Roamer to visit 2/3 shops
